ملخص البحث المنشور:
The research project was conducted with the “Land and Development” Technical Committee on land use conversion processes in the South. Land use conversion means transforming cultivated or natural land for residential purposes. The study focuses on conversions linked to urbanization, considering the uses of land relating to the construction of housing, real estate development, hoarding, or speculation, linked to the proximity of an urban center or the perspective of the advance of the urban front.
It is interested in the normal processes of land conversion, carried out quietly by local economic actors, inhabitants, and rural landholders and variously guided by regulatory frameworks and public projects. These actors acquire plots and divert them from their previous use with a view to capitalization, housing, or the development of economic activities, sometimes on a large scale yet poorly identified. When, where, and how do these ordinary land use conversions occur? Who are the actors involved in these processes? What are the possible strategies of resistance to these conversions, anticipations, and differentiated land uses?
The research was based on nine localized case studies presented in this book. They have the advantage of being able to detail the diversity of interests at stake and the spatial configurations of these conversions and of implementing a resolutely empirical methodological approach focused on the practices of the actors.
