Amman, February 9 – The Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation’s Cinema Committee will screen the Bhutanese film The Monk and the Gun (2023), directed by Pawo Choyning Dorji, tomorrow at 6:30 PM in the Foundation’s cinema hall in Jabal Amman.

Set against the breathtaking landscapes of Bhutan, the film opens with serene scenes of lush forests, wheat fields, and vibrant flowers, accompanied by music that echoes the spirit of the land. It follows a quiet village shaken by the country’s first democratic elections, introducing new challenges for villagers accustomed to a life guided by spiritual traditions.

A young monk is sent to procure rifles at the Lama’s request, sparking tension when an American arms dealer arrives. The story explores the clash between spiritual values, local traditions, and external influences, showing how communities navigate change while preserving their identity.

The film highlights Bhutan’s balance of peace, tradition, and the challenges of modernity, blending sensitive cinematography, evocative music, and natural performances. Moments of humor, ritual, and reflection capture the village’s unique culture and the subtle tensions brought by outside forces.

The Monk and the Gun presents a vivid portrait of Bhutanese life, inviting audiences to reflect on democracy, cultural preservation, and the value of spiritual harmony in a changing world.
