The Cinema Committee at Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation will screen Amal, directed by Hassan Abu Hamad, tomorrow, Tuesday. The film will be shown at 6:30 p.m. in the Foundation’s cinema hall and again at 8:00 p.m. in an open-air screening at the Foundation’s headquarters in Jabal Amman. A discussion of the film will follow both screenings.
The film tells the story of Amal, a young woman who dreams of becoming an actress and studying at an arts institute. However, harsh circumstances force her to abandon her ambitions and pursue nursing instead to support her father, who suffers from kidney failure and requires long-term, costly treatment.
Amal lives with her ailing father, her older brother Siraj, and her younger sister Rola after their mother leaves the family due to her husband’s illness. Struggling with poverty, mounting debts, overdue rent, and everyday expenses, the family relies heavily on Siraj, who works tirelessly to make ends meet. As the burden grows beyond his ability to cope, Amal begins looking for work to help save the family.
Meanwhile, Shawqi, Siraj’s close friend and neighbor, continues to pursue Amal despite her repeated rejection. She distrusts him because of his violent behavior and poor reputation, viewing him as unsuitable for her future. Nevertheless, Shawqi persists in trying to win her affection, sometimes leveraging his position as the son of the family’s landlord.
The story takes a dramatic turn when Siraj suddenly disappears under mysterious circumstances and remains missing for months without a trace. As Amal embarks on a desperate search for her brother, suspicion increasingly falls on Shawqi, who appears to be hiding secrets connected to Siraj’s disappearance.
Facing growing financial pressure, Amal accepts a well-paid nursing position at a hospital treating injured patients after learning that Siraj may be there. Her new job becomes both a source of income and a path toward uncovering the truth about her brother’s fate.
At the hospital, Amal meets Abu Elias, a mysterious yet honorable man under her care. After learning about her story, he decides to help her search for Siraj, becoming her last hope of finding her brother and saving him from an uncertain destiny.
