The Cinema Committee at Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation will screen the Serbian film Enclave (Enklava), directed by Goran Radovanović, next Tuesday, July 28, 2026. The screening will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Foundation’s cinema hall and at 8:00 p.m. in the outdoor venue at the Foundation’s headquarters in Jabal Amman. A discussion on the film will follow the screening.
Produced in 2015, Enclave is set in 2004, five years after the end of the Balkan conflict. Through the lens of director Goran Radovanović, the film explores the lasting impact of the war on a Serbian family facing discrimination and hostility from members of the Albanian majority, eventually leading them to relocate to Belgrade.
The family consists of 10-year-old Nenad, his widowed father who struggles with depression and alcoholism, and his gravely ill grandfather. In a striking reflection of the region’s divisions, Nenad travels to school each day in a peacekeeping force armored vehicle. Like many films inspired by the Kosovo conflict, Enclave examines the challenges faced by the Serbian Christian minority in Kosovo and revisits painful ethnic tensions through the perspective of a child.
The film opens in a classroom occupied by a single student—Nenad, the school’s only pupil. As he reads aloud an essay titled “My Best Friend” to his teacher, viewers discover the depth of his isolation in an Albanian-majority village, where his dying grandfather is the only friend he has. Despite the tensions surrounding him, Nenad remains determined to bring comfort to his grandfather and to build friendships with members of the Albanian community in a society deeply scarred by war.
Rather than focusing heavily on the political complexities of the Kosovo conflict, Radovanović centers the narrative on the human struggles of his characters. The film also draws broader parallels with issues of displacement and migration, highlighting demographic and social challenges that continue to shape Europe.
Enclave received international acclaim, winning the Audience Award at the Moscow International Film Festival. It was also selected by Serbia as its official submission for the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
